Why build a new museum and art gallery?

Since 1943, when local businessman Herbert James “Jimmy” Powell Bomford loaned – and later gifted – 21 works of contemporary British Art to the people of Swindon, the town has been building one of the most exceptional collections of contemporary art and ceramics and the country.

It’s also home to an excellent archaeological collection that reflects its rich history from prehistory to the modern day, including many modern finds.

The current museum and art gallery in Old Town is no longer fit for purpose.

The town centre is undergoing substantial redevelopment, and the iconic new building that’s planned will link the Old Town and the new, creating a renewed and dynamic heart that can be enjoyed by local people and by visitors alike.

How will it be financed?

The capital project of £22.5 million will be financed through a number of sources:

  • Swindon Borough Council has committed £5 million towards it
  • Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership (SWLEP) has committed £1.35 million
  • A bid is being made to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in autumn 2017
  • The trustees have donated £250,000+
  • Private donors
  • Local fundraising

Why we have chosen the town centre site?

We know from the experiences of towns and cities elsewhere that when a visitor centre is built in the centre of a town, the surrounding area gets a significant economic boost.

The museum and art gallery will attract more footfall, which will make the area attractive for high-quality independent shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as creative industries and cultural entrepreneurs.

This revival of the town will encourage future investment in other heritage assets and re-position Swindon as a thriving cultural concern – a place where people will love to live, work and visit.
